Geohazard Mitigation Techniques

Geohazard Mitigation Techniques

September 10, 2019 501 Railroad Street, Elko, NV 89801

GeoStabilization’s Trevor Ames, P. Eng. will be facilitating the geotechnical hazards workshop with other experienced professionals to better understand the complexities of geohazards. This workshop has been developed to provide a practical approach to analyzing and implementing remediation strategies for both rock and soil improvements issues as it relates to the mining industry. It provides an overview of state-of- the-art techniques and tools needed to conduct ground instability investigation, analysis, modeling and final mitigations strategies.

From this workshop participants should leave with a better understanding of:

  • Geohazard recognition (Factors that influence Geotechnical hazards)
  • Geotechnical considerations for highwall designs
  • Highwall/slope remediation techniques and investigation protocols
  • Rockfall mitigation techniques including Stabilization and Protection methodologies and,5. Slope monitoring techniques
  • Soil improvements – Slope / foundation stability/ sub-surface evaluations
  • Retaining walls fundamentals
  • Grouting techniques and practices – Seepage reduction / Sink holes / mine voids
  • Critical Slope Monitoring practices and Risk Reduction Monitoring

Please contact Trevor Ames, P. Eng. for more details. The workshop will be held at The Western Folkline Center in Elko, Nevada.

Steve Borron

Steve Borron

Geotechnical Services Manager

Steve began his academic career at San Diego State University earning both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Geological Sciences. Upon graduation, he began working at Geotechnics Incorporated working primarily on mass grading projects and then moved on to American Geotechnical Incorporated where he worked for ten years on various projects including several high-profile landslides in southern California. He then reached out to Freeport-McMoRan Incorporated (FMI) where he began working as the Senior Geologist, supervising the Geomechanical Department at FMI’s open-pit copper mine located in Bagdad, Arizona. The mining position gave him an exciting and new opportunity to study, analyze and interpret slope-monitoring radar data at a site with notoriously unstable slopes. His work resulted in several successful slope failure predictions that led to a slope failure prediction method based on data from the IDS IBIS-FM slope monitoring radar system. As a result, of repeated prediction success Freeport-McMoRan implemented the prediction method in all their North America and worldwide operations.

The success of the prediction method facilitated his presentation at the 2013 International Slope Stability Conference in Brisbane, Australia, and a presentation at Grasberg, one of the world’s most massive open-pit copper and gold mines located in Papua, Indonesia. The following year he was part of the FMI Geomechanical Group that received the “Mine Safety and Health Technology Innovations Award” from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Washington D.C. for, “An Integrated Approach to Real-Time Data Analysis for Changing Ground Conditions.”

Steve left FMI in 2016 and began consulting and working with civil engineers to provide slope-monitoring radar interpretation services. In 2018 he accepted the Geotechnical Services Manager position at IDS GeoRadar and a leadership role to advance the Geomatics Services Group to provide radar data interpretation for the civil engineering sector and training courses for both mine and civil engineering groups.
